Sometimes I do certain things with as few outside distractions as I can manage just to get immersed in the experience and enjoy it as much as I can. This morning I sat at my kitchen table and ate some trail mix. Just that, just eat trail mix. The trail mix that I currently have has almonds in it and I’ve never really enjoyed them. They seem to be a dry nut and leave me wanting water after just a few. This morning I picked almonds out of the mix and ate them one at a time, slowly and with purpose. I found they have a wonderful, subtle flavor. As I was eating them, this haiku formed and I wrote it down:
chewing almonds
when nothing else clouds the mind
a world of flavor
I’m sure there are other ways to write this and I may explore that further but not now. This is the way it came to me, and I liked it like that, so here it is.
Once I started writing haiku, it really took hold of my mind and soon, I was thinking of haiku with everything I did. I would try to see how I could make a haiku out of everything, which is probably not a good way to keep a clear mind and it did wear off a little after a while. Now they just pop up in my mind when I least expect it. And it’s true, you can write a haiku about anything!
