Welcome to “On becoming Texan.” For a long time, this blog has been called, “The Window” and I wrote about a variety of things in my life. There has been some big changes lately and I felt a new direction was necessary. Here you will find me and Barb’s story. We first met in 1978, had a wild summer together and then slowly drifted apart. Over the course of more than forty years we lived our lives and occasionally ran into each other. Those moments of coming back together were always special. In December 2021 we reconnected and found that we still had strong feelings for each other after all these years. Now our lives are taking a new direction together. I hope you come along for the ride!

I’m sorry if the bio sounds pretentious, I didn’t mean it to be. I’ve done a number of things over the years that have given me a wide range of experiences and plenty to write about.

I am sincere in my compliments. To have accomplished all you’ve done takes guts, hard work, creativity and the ability to multitask. Your versatility was what initially attracted me to your posts and which keeps me coming back for more. I am impressed.

What I find impressive is Somali people like you leaving everything you know behind and going to a new country, new language, etc. Unbelievable feats of mental strength. I see Somali, Sudanese and others in my work everyday. I suppose the strength is found when you need it most and not while I sit in my warm house.

That strength is in all of us, including you. You’re advocating for a group that has been virtually ignored and in doing so, you’re putting yourself at risk (look at Chomsky and other brilliant activists who’ve been labelled and as a result tarnished).
Somalis, especially women, were known for their dexterity and survival skills. But now, that has been replaced by Islamism and laziness. In fact, my next entry is on what we were and what we’ve now become.
