Dieting Woes

I’ve been on a diet for 19 days today, and I’ve lost 6 pounds. I should be happy about that, but I’m not. I want the weight to melt away, I want it to disappear over night. Alas, that’s not happening. It’s partly my fault. No, it’s all my fault. Even though I’m keeping to a calorie count of around 1200 to 1400 calories a day, not all of those calories are good ones. Yesterday for example, I had 300 calories for breakfast, all good, healthy calories, and a 300 calorie shake for lunch. But I had a taco and potato ole type deep fried thing for supper. The entire day was less than 1400 calories but I got a lot of fat and sugar in there. So I haven’t been sticking to my diet plan like I should. So only 6 pounds lost in 19 days and that’s on me. Sticking to my original plan of having eggs for breakfast, a shake for lunch and fish or chicken with veggies for dinner is what I’ve got to do. And fruit or popcorn for a snack.

I read an article this morning about refined sugar. The author gave up all refined sugar for two weeks and noticed some amazing changes. Here’s a link to the story. The World Health Organization says people should not eat more than 25 grams of refined sugar a day. Almost all processed foods contain refined sugar so if you eat processed foods, you’re likely getting way more refined sugar than you should. The article says that sugar actually changes the chemistry of your brain and the addiction to it is worse than cocaine. An unfortunate thing about the Herbalife shakes I have for lunch is that they contain refined sugar. So a shake with peanut powder in it is 11 grams of refined sugar. That’s not bad, but I’m getting more from snacks too. As long as I have fish or chicken with vegetables for dinner, and no snacks with sugar in them, I’ll be doing okay.

Sticking to it is hard though. I was consuming a lot of sugar before I went on a diet. A lot. I was drinking soda, eating ice cream, and other stuff high in sugar so I’m having cravings. According to the article, the author went through that too. After a couple weeks, he says the craving subsided. I’m hoping that happens to me. And it’s an incentive to give up the shakes I’m having in favor of a low calorie lunch. But what can you eat at 300-400 calories that will stick with you all afternoon? I’ll have to look into it.

So here I am in dieting hell, trying to lose weight. I’ve always been the kind of person who ate because I knew I needed to eat as opposed to making sure every meal was a gourmet delight. So having bland meals isn’t a problem. The problem is getting enough calories and protein to keep healthy while still losing a chunk of weight. It’s a fine balancing act. The article I read (link above) says that after you quit sugar you brain realizes that food tastes good without it. Fruit tastes sweeter, average food takes on enhanced flavor, the way it should taste. So even though I’m not cutting out refined sugar entirely, I’m looking forward to the effects of a lot less of it. Tally ho!
