International Human Rights Day

Today is International Human Rights Day! Time for us all to think about all the people in the world, in your country, even in your own town who do not have equal rights. If you’re White, you rarely have to think about this. If you’re straight, you rarely have to think about this. But you should. There are lots of people in the world who don’t have basic human rights. If you follow a religion and your religion says to “love your neighbor” or something to that effect, then wanting basic human rights for all is a part of that.

So just think about that. Take time today to think about how good you have it. Can you drive to a store and buy what you want? Are you giving Christmas presents this year? Do you know how many people in the world don’t have what they need to survive a single day? This is important. This is our world. Just because it’s not you, can you just not think about it? As you enjoy eating a meal today, think about those who are deprived of basic food. As you enjoy safety today think about those who are not safe. Getting married soon? Know someone who is? Think about those who don’t have the right to marry. Think about what it would be like if you could not marry the one you love. Think about not being able to be safe on your streets or in your home. The next time your furnace comes on or you flip on a light, think about Palestinians having their electricity cut off.

Look for ways you can help. Christmas is coming. For those who celebrate it, find ways you can give to those who’s basic human rights are compromised. Look, listen, find out. And help some one. Don’t say, “What can I do?” Everyone can do something. Just do it!

  1. I have food and a home even though I don’t have money to buy anyone anything for a gift…they know I love them and I know they love me. I’m so thankful for the blessings the Lord has provided and for having a purpose in life.

  2. One Bible verse that cuts to the chase is Matthew 18:7, where the man says, “It is expected that evil will arise, but it will weigh heavily upon him by whom it arises.”
